 Working Online

When you are working online, you are connected to a server over the internet. A server is a computer that stores the files you work with and coordinates access among multiple users working on the same file.

When one user begins making changes, the file is locked for editing. Other users who are working on the same file can continue viewing it, but they cannot make changes until the first user saves the file. Once the file is saved, the updated changes become visible to all other users and the lock is released.

How to connect to a server?

To connect to your server, select FileConnect to from the main menu at the top of the screen. A dialog window will appear containing four fields: Host, Port, Username, and Password. You will receive these connection details from Lantiv when you subscribe to the program.

After connecting with an administrative account, you can manage the list of users who are allowed to connect to the server and configure their access privileges, such as full control or read-only access.

How to create a new file?

When you connect to the server for the first time, you will see two links on the left-hand side: New and Upload. To create a new file, click New. A dialog window will open where you can enter the file name and an optional password.

Important: If you choose to set a password, make sure you remember it. Without this password, it will not be possible to open the file or recover any of its contents. The file is encrypted using the password you provide, and the password itself is not stored anywhere. Each time you open the file in the future, you will be prompted to enter the password.

Note: If encryption is not important for your use case, you may leave the password field empty. In that case, the file will not be encrypted, and you will not be asked for a password when opening it.

How to upload a file?

In addition to creating a new file, you can also upload an existing file to the server. This can be a file created with an earlier version of our software (version 6 or 7), or a file that you previously downloaded from the server and now want to upload again to continue working on it.

To upload a file, click Upload and select the file from your computer. The file will be uploaded to the server and will then appear in the list of shared files in the upper-left corner of the window.

How to open a file?

Once you are connected to a server, a list of the files hosted on that server will be displayed in the top-left corner of the main window. To open a file, simply click its name in the list.

How to rename, remove or duplicate a file?

To rename, remove, or duplicate a file, right-click the file in the file list. A menu will appear, allowing you to choose the desired action.

Note: Only users with the Administrate privilege can remove files.

How to restore a backed-up version of a file?

Files on the server are backed up regularly. To restore a backup, right-click the file and select Restore from the popup menu. A window will then appear showing all available backup versions of the file. Select one or more versions to restore by checking the box next to the desired date(s) and click OK. The restored versions will be added to the file list. Both the current file and the restored versions will be available for opening.

Another way to restore a file to a previous backed-up state is to open the file first and then select File, Restore from the main menu. A window listing the available backups will appear, allowing you to choose one backup version to restore. When restored in this manner, the file itself will be reverted to the selected backup version.

How to download a file?

You can download any file from the server to your computer. Downloaded files can be opened offline (without connecting to the server) for viewing, printing, or exporting.

To download a file, right-click it in the server's file list and select Download. You will be prompted to choose a local folder in which to save the file. After clicking Save, the file will be downloaded and stored on your computer.

To open a downloaded file while offline, select File, Open from the main menu.

How to manage the users who are allowed to connect to the server?

The server administrator can manage the list of users who are allowed to connect to the server. If you are logged in as the administrator, you will see a Users link on the left side of the main window. Click this link to open the Users window.

In the Users window, you can add new users, edit usernames and passwords, and assign privileges to each user.

Users can change their own password after connecting to the server. To do so, click the plus button next to the Password field, select Change Password and enter a new password.

As the administrator, you can assign an initial password to each user and ask them to change it to a password of their choice when they connect for the first time.
